WE NEED VOLUNTEER CAKE MAKERS! Do you like to bake? We are looking for volunteer cake makers to fill our cake fridge with cakes, biscuits, muffins and slices. Just one day a week but we do need a commitment of a few months so we can train you if required! If you're interested, please call our footscray site on 0424 081 652 and Ousman will call you with more details. Lentil is largely a Volunteer run organisation. Volunteering is a great way to be involved in a unique organisation, learn new skills and meet fantastic people. There are many different ways you can be involved at Lentil! We always need help serving in the restaurant or cooking in the kitchen. Or you may have a particular skill that would be helpful to the organisation, i.e; legal advice, counseling, administration (finance), tutoring (English or general high school tutoring) or able to provide regular Barista training. We are ALWAYS on the lookout for volunteer musicians who would like to play in our restaurants! Please call Matt on 0424241684 to discuss any volunteer work. Lentil's Council of Advisors Kerry Walker Director, Neighborhood Justice Centre Kerry Walker is trained as a welfare worker and lawyer and has been involved in the field of juvenile justice, advocacy and community work of a long period of years. Kerry has held several positions managing complex program environments, redeveloping services and leading innovative projects both in government services and community service organisations. Kerry is currently a member of the Victorian Drug and Alcohol prevention council, the Neighbourhood Advisory Team in Collingwood and the Neighbourhood Advisory Board in Fitzroy. Kerry has been a member of the Youth Parole Board in Victoria, the CEO of a Youth Training Centre, a senior Policy and Program Advisor in State Government, a member of the Ministerial Roundtable on Juvenile Justice, and other senior advisory and operational roles. She has been involved in the design of adolescent child protection teams, case planning systems in Juvenile Justice, an outreach program for sentenced young women, the redevelopment of services within the Salvation Army in Melbourne (working with refugees, and a redeveloping the service design of their women’s refuge), as well as redeveloping a range of other community based programs connected with education and employment and social enterprise goals. Khalid Osman Secretary of the Council of Combined Sudanese Groups of Australia, Community Development and Youth Officer for AMES, Publisher of The Migrant, Arabic/English newspaper which includes a Lentil As Anything news sheet. Khalid Osman is a poet, a journalist and a Human Rights Activist, Born in Sudan, 1961 and graduated in Khartoum University and assumed various managerial positions in multinational corporations. He currently works as a project co-ordinator in AMES and editor in chief of The Migrant Newspaper, the only Sudanese Community Newspaper in Australia
Chris Pierson Service Innovation Manager, Foundation House For the past 15 years Chris Pierson has been employed in the area of refugee resettlement. In this time he has worked as an English language teacher, youth worker, mental health support and project management. Since February 2006 Chris has been employed at the Victorian foundation for Survivors of Torture (Foundation House) as a member of the senior management team where he manages the Service Innovation Program which works on system change projects that look at ways of increasing mainstream support to families and individuals arriving in Australia through humanitarian resettlement program.
Lynne Rahill Arts Consultant From migrant parents, I have always worked in public programs. For 14 years I worked in high schools teaching languages and literature. For the last 14 years I have worked in the Arts, as Festivals, Events and Creative Development Manager. My commitment to our community comes from a firm belief that with food and shelter, the spirit of a community is nurtured through the arts. My greatest joy is in facilitating opportunities and pathways for artists and communities to self determine their cultural and artistic growth.
Dur-e Dara OAM Restauranter, Philanthropist Dur-e Dara OAM is a Melbourne restaurateur, businesswoman and musician. She is Indian by race, Malaysian by birth and an Australian Citizen by choice. Dur-e came to Australia to continue her secondary and tertiary education over 40 years ago. Her current business is the Nudel Bar, Bourke Street. She is Convenor of the Victorian Women’s Trust, Vice President of Philanthropy Australia, and Deputy Chair of La Mama Theatre. Dur-e’s dedication to philanthropy and in particular her leadership of the Victorian Women’s Trust (VWT) since 1991, has enabled minority women’s groups such as the Victorian Immigrant and Refugee Women’s Coalition to receive grants to assist their capacity to represent immigrant and refugee women’s voice in this state. In 1997, she was awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia for services to the community and promotional fundraising activities for women's groups. In 2008 Dur-e chose to pursue an abiding interest in working with others to promote and inspire developments in food and wine. An important current engagement includes consultancy to Tourism Victoria and Destination Gippsland as an Ambassador or Patron but choosing to be described as An Enthusiastic Voice for Gippsland. This appointment leads a campaign called Gippsland Inspired. Another current engagement is providing regular conversation about food and other matters with Radio Australia Breakfast Show broadcast across Asia and the Pacific. For over 30 years Dur-e has lived and performed with Melbourne artist, sculptor and musician David Tolley, and helped rear his two children. She is also blessed by a grand-daughter.
